record collection revisited: Tedeschi/Trucks Band Live "Everybody's Talkin' "

For their second record, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, and their band, decided to do a live record to capture their shows on CD.  The album definitely captures the live environment and the set list includes many of their own new songs as well as some precisely chosen cover tracks.  The band is very tight, from the main performers including Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi on guitars, Kofi Burbridge on keyboards, his brother (and Allman Brother), Oteil Burbridge, on bass, the drumming tandem of Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson, backing vocalists Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers, (Mattison was lead vocalist in the former iteration of the band, The Derek Trucks Band), and horn players Kebbi Williams on tenor saxophone, Maurice Brown on trumpet, and Saunders Sermons on trombone.

This record is truly one that has to be heard, and if you did not get a chance to see the TTB live on the road, well, it's the next best thing to being at a gig.  Yours truly wanted to see a show they did last summer in the Twin Cities.  It didn't work out.  But, those things happen.  Life gets in the way, and we can't see every show that comes to town.  Well, I was very excited to get this album when it was released.  It does capture the band's live sound, and in the middle of the show, there are bass and drum solos, just like an Allman Brothers gig.  So, if you've heard this record, that's cool.  If not, do check it out.  Here's the whole set list/track listing.  It was recorded on October 25th, 2011 at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Disc 1

1. Everybody's Talkin' (Fred Neil cover)
2. Midnight In Harlem (Swamp Raga intro w/Little Martha)
3. Learn How To Love
4. Bound For Glory
5. Rollin' and Tumblin' (a TTB original composition, not to be confused with the Muddy Waters song of the same name)
6. Bound For Glory
7. Nobody's Free
8. Darling Be Home Soon (John Sebastian cover)

Disc 2

1. That Did It (Bobby Bland cover)
2. Uptight (Stevie Wonder cover)
3. Love Has Something Else To Say (with Kissing My Love)
4. Wade In The Water (Sam Cooke cover)

A very eclectic set list of both originals and cover tracks, and furthermore, a satisfying set to listen to.  The Tedeschi Trucks Band does a masterful job not only of playing the music, but bringing the listener into the live experience of the show as it was put on the record.  Very cool indeed.
