"Always There" (revisited)

An all-star band at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival, playing Ronnie Laws' classic "Always There".  The band includes Boney James, Kirk Whalum, and Kenny Garrett on saxophones, Rick Braun on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and a few other ace musicians on keyboards and drums.  Not sure who plays in the rhythm section.  But, the main players are all listed.  This cut is really cool, as there is also a tease of Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" thrown into the jam for good measure.

The full band lineup is:

Rick Braun : Trumpet (Flugelhorn)
Kenny Garrett : Alto Sax.
Boney James : Tenor Sax.
Kirk Whalum : Tenor Sax.
Larry Carlton : Guitar
George Duke : Keyboards
Billy Kilson : Drums
Mike Manson : Bass

Matt "Guitar" Murphy

Happy Birthday to another blues guitar legend.  Yours truly, has just discovered, Matt "Guitar" Murphy.  Dig this.

December 29th, 1927: Matt "Guitar" Murphy was born in Sunflower, Mississippi.

Guitar playing ran in the Murphy household (which moved from Mississippi to Memphis when Matt was a toddler). Matt and his brother Floyd both made a name for themselves on the early-'50s Memphis scene (that's Floyd on Little Junior Parker & the Blue Flames' 1953 Sun waxings of "Feelin' Good" and "Mystery Train"). Matt played with Howlin' Wolf as early as 1948 (harpist Little Junior Parker was also in the band at the time). Murphy added hot licks to early sides by Parker and Bobby Bland for Modern before latching on with Memphis Slim's House Rockers in 1952. Normally, the veteran pianist eschewed guitarists altogether, but Murphy's talent was so prodigious that he made an exception.

Murphy's consistently exciting guitar work graced Slim's United waxings from 1952-1954 and his 1958-1959 platters for Vee-Jay. Another solid Memphis Slim LP for Strand in 1961 and dates with Chuck Berry, Otis Rush, Sonny Boy Williamson, Etta James, and the Vibrations at Chess preceded Murphy's memorable appearance on the 1963 American Folk Blues Festival tour of Europe (along with Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Lonnie Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Victoria Spivey, and Willie Dixon). On that pioneering tour (promoted by Lippmann and Rau), Murphy commanded the spotlight with a thrilling "Matt's Guitar Boogie" that showcased his ultra-clean rapid-fire picking. Freddie King is said to have once admitted that he based his "Hide Away" on Murphy's playing during this performance.

Harpist James Cotton was the beneficiary of Murphy's prowess during much of the 1970s. Murphy's crisp picking matched Cotton's high-energy blowing on the harpist's 1974 Buddah album 100% Cotton (the guitarist penned a non-stop "Boogie Thing" for the set). From there, it was on to aiding and abetting John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd's antic mugging, both on stage and in the Blues Brothers flick (where he played Aretha Franklin's guitarist hubby, convinced to come out of retirement by the boys in black).

Murphy has toured as a bandleader, having recorded an album of his own in 1990, Way Down South, for Antone's (with brother Floyd on rhythm guitar). His repertoire encompasses blues, funk, jazz, R&B, and even a few of those Blues Brothers chestnuts. Murphy has been less active since he suffered a stroke on stage while performing in Nashville in 2003—he finished his set performing with one hand. A benefit was mounted by notable musicians of Memphis and Nashville. He has recently been playing in Florida with two young protégés Tim O'Donnell and Darrell Raines, and performed with his nephew Floyd in the Florida Keys during 2009.

He has been on the comeback trail with a reunion performance with James Cotton at the 2010 Chicago Blues Festival. A September 2011 release took place of a 1986 live recording from the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia. Patton Biddle recorded the show live, and Floyd Murphy Jr., Matt's nephew, played the drums along with Howard Eldridge on vocals. He also recently appeared in April of 2013 at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival at MSG in NYC.

Rick Danko "Twilight"

Happy Birthday to the late, great, Rick Danko, from The Band.  Here is his song, "Twilight".

The contrasts in modern country music in 2013

Yours truly has been influenced and inspired by country music, and the songwriting aspect of it, for a long time, and along with blues, jazz, rock, and soul, it's been a core style that I've drawn from.  Now, that doesn't mean all country music is created equal.  It is a debate.  But, there is FAR MORE to country music than just the stereotypical lyrics heard in most of the 2013 mainstream songs about pretty girls, pickup trucks, dirt roads, and booze.

Not trying to give any advice on what people should listen to.  Far from it.  But, here's the contrast between mainstream country, and artists off the beaten path, that still holds true to the tradition that country music has been based on throughout it's long, rich history.  So, we'll separate the wheat from the chaff, right now.

Proof That Every Country Song Was Exactly The Same in 2013
http://www.buzzfeed.com/perpetua/every-country-song-was-the-same-in-2013

Sorry BuzzFeed.  Y'all are taking too narrow of a view of it.  Here's "proof" (in quotes for a reason), that there STILL is good country music out there, and that legacies of the legendary songwriters, along with new talent who actually care about song craft, still exist.

Bob James "Valley of The Shadows"

From Bob James' album "One", this is "Valley of The Shadows".  This tune is incredible.  It is very much a fusion number and has echoes of the same kind of spacey, psychedelic jazz of the same era in the early 1970s that was being played by Miles Davis and Weather Report.  This tune is crazy!  Almost like something that Miles recorded on "Bitches Brew" in terms of it's intensity.  It morphs from swirling psychedelic cacophony, into strains of Martin Luther's epic hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", at least briefly towards the end of the tune, as something jam bands like to call a "tease".  But, don't ask me where the album artwork came from.  That is bizarre.

Good news from Muscle Shoals Sound Studios

A press release from the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios Facebook page.

***

PRESS RELEASE:
BEATS ELECTRONICS REVIVES MUSCLE SHOALS SOUND STUDIO

Santa Monica- November [26], 2013- Beats Electronics LLC (Beats), the leading audio brand co-founded by legendary artist and producer Dr. Dre and Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine, today announced a project in partnership with the Muscle Shoals Music Foundation to preserve the rich history and culture of the iconic Muscle Shoals Sound.

This project will include restoring the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio to a fully-functioning recording studio, as well as updating the legendary FAME Recording Studio. As a key part of the project, Beats will foster training for current and aspiring musicians, producers and engineers with opportunities to work and learn in these classic spaces, where legendary artists like Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones recorded some of the most influential songs of all time. Studio time working with experienced recording professionals will be granted at no cost to applicants who best meet the program's stated objectives. A portion of Beats’ holiday sales proceeds will help fund this important project.

"Magic is a word that’s too often misused in the record industry. Muscle Shoals is different, it’s one of the rare places where it really exists," said Jimmy Iovine. “Anytime you can capture such a distinct and authentic sound over and over again, that’s something worth protecting.”

“Too many of America’s greatest recording studios are falling into commercial disrepair or falling prey to the pressures of real estate development,” said Beats president Luke Wood. “We are extremely happy that we can leverage Beats’ success to help return Muscle Shoals to a level befitting its rich history and create a program that will provide the next generation of great producers, engineers and recording artists with access to free studio time and the...

(REST OF PRESS RELEASE) to free studio time and the opportunity to learn the trade from experienced recording professionals, and we are especially pleased to launch this project during the holiday season.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with
an amazing company like Beats to ensure that we bring the Muscle Shoals Sound to a new generation of listeners,” said Muscle Shoals Music Foundation Chairman, Rodney Hall. “The Muscle Shoals Sound is a funky, soulful music mash-up of great players, songs and singers, and just as with Beats, we are all about the magic of music. We think that Beats is the perfect partner for this project and we want to thank the entire Beats staff for helping to keep our sound alive.”

Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is the birthplace of some of the world’s most beloved and influential songs. The sought after "Muscle Shoals Sound" was initially created at FAME studios with its original house band, and later the Swampers, under visionary producer Rick Hall. FAME recorded Soul-defining classics such as Wilson Pickett’s "Land of 1,000 Dances," “Funky Broadway” and "Mustang Sally," Aretha Franklin’s hit, "I Never Loved A Man/Do Right Man," and Etta James’ classics, "Tell Mama," and “I’d Rather Go Blind.” More recently, FAME has worked with artists such as Alicia Keys and Band of Horses.

The Muscle Shoals sound continued to thrive when The Swampers left FAME to open the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and went on to produce, The Rolling Stones’, “Brown Sugar," Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome," Bob Seger’s, "Old Time Rock and Roll," and countless other iconic hits. The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio has recently been utilized by the Black Keys to record their Grammy award-winning album, “Brothers.”

B.B. King "Blues Boys Tune"

Holy smokes!  B.B. King does quite the solo on this number, called "Blues Boys Tune".  There is another version, from a little earlier in his career than is even more intense.  It comes from a performance at the 1993 Montreux Jazz Festival.

Herbie Hancock "Mwandishi" Sextet "Sleeping Giant"

Check out "Sleeping Giant" from 1972 by Herbie Hancock and his "Mwandishi" Sextet, featuring:

Herbie Hancock: piano & Rhodes piano
Eddie Henderson: trumpet
Julian Priester: trombone
Bennie Maupin: soprano saxophone, flute, & bass clarinet
Buster Williams: bass
Billy Hart: drums

This precedes, by a year or so, the Headhunters band Hancock formed that became so well known, especially with their first record that came out the year after this, in 1973.  Cool music!
