Ry Cooder "Straight Street"

Another tune from Ry Cooder's new record "The Prodigal Son" coming out in two weeks.  This is "Straight Street".

Directed by Jeff Coffman

LYRICS

well i used to live on broadway, right next to the liar’s house
my number was self-righteousness and a very little guide of mouth
so i moved, yes i moved, and i’m living on straight street now

before i moved over, let me tell you how it was with me
old satan had me bound in chains and i had no liberty
one day my heart got troubled all about my dwelling place
i heard the Lord when He spoke to me, and he told me to leave that place
so i moved, i moved and i’m living on straight street now

since i moved, i’m really living, i’ve got peace within
i thank the Lord for everything, so glad i found new friends
since i moved, i moved, and i’m living on straight street now

Directed by Jeff Coffman

The album release, is coming soon.

LYRICS

everybody ought to treat a stranger right, long ways from home
everybody ought to treat a stranger right, a long ways from home
be careful how you treat a stranger, by belying you turn him away but the fear that he might endanger will drive him from your gate

chorus

be mindful of your speaking, careful how you go along you must always treat a poor stranger right and accept him in your home

chorus

all of us down here are strangers, none of us have no home don’t ever hurt your brother and cause him to feel alone

chorus

everybody ought to treat a stranger right

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers “A Night In Tunisia”

Another video, credited to Jazz Video Guy on YouTube.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - A Night in Tunisia featuring Wallace Roney, Joe Henderson, Curtis Fuller and Cedar Walton.

The Jazz Messengers were an influential jazz combo that existed for over thirty-five years beginning in the early 1950s as a collective, and ending when long-time leader and founding drummer Art Blakey died in 1990.[4] Blakey led or co-led the group from the outset.Art Blakey" and "Jazz Messengers" became synonymous over the years, though Blakey did lead non-Messenger recording sessions and played as a sideman for other groups throughout his career.

Yes sir, I'm gonna to stay with the youngsters. When these get too old, I'm gonna get some younger ones. Keeps the mind active.

— Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland, Vol. 2 (CD), The group evolved into a proving ground for young jazz talent. While veterans occasionally re-appeared in the group, by and large, each iteration of the Messengers included a lineup of new young players. Having the Messengers on one's resume was a rite of passage in the jazz world, and conveyed immediate bona fides.

Many former members of the Jazz Messengers established careers as solo musicians, such as Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Timmons, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Chuck Mangione, Keith Jarrett, Joanne Brackeen, Woody Shaw, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison and Mulgrew Miller.

Featured performers/soloists on “A Night in Tunisia”

Art Blakey: drums
Joe Henderson: tenor saxophone
Charnett Moffett: upright bass
Curtis Fuller: trombone
Michael Petrucciani: piano
Cedar Walton: piano
Wallace Roney: trumpet

Ry Cooder "The Prodigal Son"

Directed by Jeff Coffman

"The Prodigal Son", Ry Cooder's first new solo release in six years, is set for release May 11, 2018!

LYRICS

now, the prodigal son was a forward child, his mind was not to obey

i believe i believe that i will go back home

i believe i believe that i will go back home

and be a servant of the Lord

his father saw him coming he met him with a smile

he threw his arms around him saying this is my darling child

chorus

the prodigal said, i searched for true religion, but to peace and no faith could i find

until i came to a little place called Bakersfield, that eased my troublin’ mind

chorus

i wandered into a tavern where a music band was playin’

the steel guitar rang out so sweet, i feel like i was prayin’

i asked a comely waitress, is this a new teaching

she said there is no God but God, and Ralph Mooney is his name

let me empty your ashtray, Mr. Mooney, if the drunks interfere i’ll be sad

but just as long as you sit there on the bandstand and play your guitar like Buddha, i’ll be glad

the father asked the prodigal, did you smell the sweet perfume and hear the angel band?

he said, dim lights, thick smoke, and loud, loud music is the only kind of truth i’ll ever understand

the prodigal son

Elizabeth Cotten "Shake Sugaree"

Check out another song by Elizabeth Cotten.  This one is "Shake Sugaree".

Favorite verses:

I pawned my watch
I pawned my chain
I pawned everything that was in my name
Oh Lord, oh me, didn't I shake Sugaree
Everything I got is in pawn

I pawned my tobacco
I pawned my pipe
I pawned everything that's in sight
Oh Lord, oh me, didn't I shake sugaree
Everything I got is in pawn

Alison Krauss "When You Say Nothing at All"

This is one of the great ones as far as the canon of contemporary country music.  Alison Krauss, "When You Say Nothing at All", definitely on the list of yours truly's favorite country songs of all-time.  The song was written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz.  The late, great country singer Keith Whitley made it a hit first, before Alison Krauss covered it, and it was also a hit tune for Irish singer, Ronan Keating in 1999.
