Country's Ultimate 2014 Grammys Performance

Watch a recreation of the country music super group, The Highwaymen, featuring original members Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, along with Merle Haggard and Blake Shelton, from last night's Grammy Awards.  This is pretty cool.  At least some of the living legends are still around.

David Sanborn "I've Got News For You"

Cool cover of a tune originally sung by Ray Charles that has been featured here before.  In fact, the featured version was the Ray Charles one.  Here is "I've Got News For You" performed by David Sanborn.  His keyboardist (Ricky Peterson), who has performed with many other great musicians, plays Hammond B3 and sings the fool out of it.

Slim Harpo "I'm A King Bee"

January 11th, 1924: Slim Harpo was born James Moore in Lobdell, Louisiana.

The eldest in an orphaned family, he worked as a longshoreman and construction worker during the late 1930s and early 1940s. He began performing in Baton Rouge bars under the name Harmonica Slim and later accompanied his brother-in-law, Lightnin' Slim, both live and in the studio.

Named Slim Harpo by producer J.D. "Jay" Miller, he started his own recording career in 1957. His solo debut was the Grammy Hall of Fame single "I'm a King Bee" backed with "I Got Love If You Want It."

Harpo recorded under A&R man J.D. "Jay" Miller, in Crowley, Louisiana for Excello Records based in Nashville, Tennessee, and enjoyed a string of popular R&B singles, including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee "Rainin' In My Heart" (1961) and the number one Billboard R&B hit "Baby Scratch My Back" (1966). On these recordings he was accompanied by the regular stable of Excello musicians, including Lazy Lester.

British rock bands like the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, the Yardbirds, Pink Floyd and Them featured versions of his songs in their early repertoires. Later, the riff from Harpo's 1966 hit "Shake Your Hips", which itself was derivative of Bo Diddley's "Bring It to Jerome", was used in the ZZ Top hit "La Grange", and the Rolling Stones covered the song on their 1972 album Exile On Main Street. "Shake Your Hips" was also covered by Joan Osborne on her 2012 album Bring It On Home.

Harpo's recordings were also widely covered in modern African-American circles, including by the late Gil Scott-Heron on his final album. Scott-Heron covered "I'll Take Care of You" on his record I'm New Here. The song is also featured on the remix album featuring Jamie XX called We're New Here.

Other notable covers of Slim Harpo songs include "I Got Love If You Want It" by The Kinks, "I'm the Face" by the Who (when they were still called The High Numbers), "I'm A King Bee" by The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and The Doors, and "Don't Start Crying Now" by Them with Van Morrison.

In 2012 a Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Whiskey commercial featured Harpo's song "I'm a King Bee" covered by San Francisco blues band The Stone Foxes.

Never a full-time musician, Harpo had his own trucking business during the 1960s. He died following a heart attack at the age of 46 on January 31st, 1970, 20 days after his birthday. Harpo was buried in Mulatto Bend Cemetery in Port Allen, Louisiana.

One more post for today, as we remember "The King".  Here's Elvis Presley, with "Heartbreak Hotel" in his first appearance on the Milton Berle Show.

Derek Trucks & Warren Haynes to Depart Allman Brothers Band at End of 2014

It is hard for yours truly to write about this objectively.  The Allman Brothers are perhaps my all-time favorite band, and my biggest inspiration for wanting to pick up an electric guitar.  When I read this news, I understood the reasoning, but was still completely and utterly shocked.

Delbert McClinton "Givin' It Up For Your Love"

Cool Delbert McClinton song called "Givin' It Up For Your Love" recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1980 at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.  This tune has that unique groove drenched all over it!  McClinton is great, but this tune is even better because of the vibe of what Muscle Shoals Sound brought to music.  Check it out.

Murder On Music Row

This is a follow-up to a story posted last week about how country music has been completely destroyed by commercialism.  The tune is likely to be controversial among country music fans.  But, here it is.  This song is called "Murder On Music Row".  There are two versions.  One is done by George Strait and Alan Jackson, and the other, is by the writers of the tune, Larry Cordle and Larry Shell.  The above video, is the George Strait and Alan Jackson version.  Below that, is the video of Larry Cordle, playing it with his band, Lonesome Standard Time.

Hank Williams "Cold, Cold Heart"

Hank Williams died on New Year's Day, 1953.  He is still missed to this day, but his music is still significant.  A legend and a pillar of country music for sure.  Here's his mournful ballad, "Cold, Cold Heart".

Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin "Afro Blue"

From the 2004 Montreux Jazz Festival, an all-star cast of musicians covers John Coltrane's "Afro Blue" including his son Raavi Coltrane and Wayne Shorter on saxophones, Chick Corea on keyboards, and Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin on guitars.  This is superb.
