Flashback| Buddy Guy Duels With Derek, Warren, & Trey

The wildest four-way guitar jam, perhaps, ever.  The Allman Brothers, at one of their 40th anniversary shows at the Beacon Theater in New York, invited Buddy Guy, (Happy Birthday, Buddy!), as well as guitarist Trey Anastasio, and keyboardist Page McConnell, from Phish, onstage, and these guys absolutely blew the roof off "Southbound", the classic from the ABB's 1973 "Brothers & Sisters" record.  Killer jam!  Click the link at JamBase, and dig it, y'all.

Wet Willie "Same Old Moon"

Great song by Wet Willie, sung by their lead vocalist, and all around great musician, Jimmy Hall.  It's kind of a cross between a gospel song and an R&B ballad.  This is "Same Old Moon".

Blind Boy Fuller "Get Your Ya Yas Out"

Goofy little ditty by bluesman Blind Boy Fuller.  This is "Get Your Ya Yas Out".  This piece, is actually more ragtime than blues.  But, it's still pretty cool.  The Rolling Stones named one of their albums, (of a live concert they did), after this song.

George Harrison Memorial Tree killed... by beetles; replanting due

There's irony in this story.  But, I imagine the late, great, George Harrison, would not be too worried about this, and would probably just laugh.  Incidentally, Harrison, is the favorite Beatle of yours truly.

Blind Willie McTell - Last Session (Vinyl LP)

Dig this Blind Willie McTell record.  It's his last session, on vinyl LP.  McTell plays songs, and tells stories.  Just listen, and enjoy.

Blind Willie McTell "Statesboro Blues"

Check this out.  This is the original record of "Statesboro Blues" by Blind Willie McTell from 1929.  People thought the tune implied that McTell was a native of Statesboro, Georgia.  This is not true, as he was born in Thomson, Georgia.  Here's some history behind the tune, too.  The Allman Brothers most famously have covered it, as noted here.  But, it's also been tackled by John Mayall and Deep Purple, among others.

The 5 Royales "Say It"

Great R&B recording by a band called The 5 Royales from 1957.  This is beyond R&B though, because the group's guitarist, Lowman Pauling, fires away with some very bluesy, stinging leads on this one.

Johnny Winter "Be Careful With A Fool"

We continue to honor and remember Johnny Winter.  In one of his first hit tunes, he gives people some great advice.  You must, when wanting to fall in love with anyone, "Be Careful With A Fool".

In memoriam: Johnny Winter

Sad news.  One of my guitar heroes, and a blues legend, Johnny Winter, has died at age 70, while on a tour in Europe, in Zurich, Switzerland.  I saw him play in 2007 at the Cabooze blues bar here in Minneapolis and he and his band smoked the stage that night.  Winter had a very unique tone on his Gibson Firebird, especially when he played slide, making the guitar absolutely scream.  He also played a custom built Erlewine Lazer guitar for fretted leads.  He consistently released albums throughout his career, both live, and in the studio.  His discography dates all the way back to 1969, including collaborations with his brother, Edgar Winter, who has his own band.  All blues fans, should check out his music.  Look for a Spotify Sunday listing (or, a couple), dedicated to Johnny Winter, very soon.  Rest In Peace, Johnny Winter.

Here is the announcement regarding Winter's death.

Gov't Mule "Ain't No Love In The Heart of The City" (feat. Bernie Marsden, Don Airey, & Joe McGlohon)

Gov't Mule's encore from their recent show in London, at the Brooklyn Bowl.  The encore actually has two songs.  "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Nina Simone that was later covered in 1965, by The Animals, as well as Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Ain't No Love In The Heart of The City", which Haynes has covered with Gov't Mule and the Allman Brothers, and Marsden played guitar on, as a member of British boogie rock turned hair metal band Whitesnake.  Don Airey plays keyboards, and Joe McGlohon plays saxophone, on this encore as well.  Awesome stuff!
