Allman Brothers and Steve Winwood "I Found A Love"

This tune is getting to be a popular one on the Allman Brothers set list.  Another version of "I Found Love" with guest vocals by Steve Winwood, from their Wednesday August 28th gig at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga, New York.  Click the link, and check out the second rendition of the song to make an appearance on this blog.

Elvin Bishop @ the Minnesota Zoo Weesner Family Amphitheater 8-28-13

Last Wednesday night, yours truly was privileged to see Elvin Bishop and Ruthie Foster play a show at the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo.  Despite arriving slightly late, I caught some of Ruthie Foster's opening set, which was very soulful, as she was backed by a full band, while playing acoustic guitar, including an excellent Hammond B3 player, who also played mandolin. Notable songs in Foster's set included:

"All Slips Away"
"I Really Love You" (a tune she recorded in Memphis, Tennessee)
"When It Don't Come Easy" (a Patti Griffith penned song)
"Small Town Blues" (an acoustic blues number)
"Ring of Fire" (a brilliant R&B cover of the Johnny Cash classic)
"If I Had A Hammer"
"Real Love"

Elvin Bishop and his band showcased Cajun flavored roots in their show, even though Bishop grew up in the musically rich landscape of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The band featured Bishop and Bob Welch on guitar, Steve Willis on keyboards and accordion, Ed Early on trombone, Ruth Davies on bass, and a drummer, who's name was mentioned, but cannot be remembered.  Bishop's set featured plenty of Cajun and jazz influenced numbers and he completely veered away from a lot of the hit songs that made him a well known name in the 1970s southern fried boogie rock era.

Although, some of those tunes, did make appearances.  In the last few decades, Bishop has really centered himself upon blues and Cajun music.  The twin lead guitar work between Bishop and Welch, was phenomenal and reminiscent of any other band from that era that came from down south, where twinned guitar solos, were what made the music special.  The two of them, dug in, and played some very inspiring licks, Bishop doing some of his, with a slide, on his red 1959 Gibson ES345 that has been with him pretty much since the beginning of his career when he played alongside Mike Bloomfield in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the mid 1960s.

The show was a nostalgic throwback indeed, and a real treat musically.  Here's the set list.

Marian McPartland "I Could Write A Book" (In Memoriam: Marian McPartland)

The late, great jazz piano legend Marian McPartland playing the Rogers & Hart tune, "I Could Write A Book".  The tune was released in 1940 and her version, came out fifteen years later, in 1955.  Stay tuned for more about Marian McPartland.  She just passed away today, August 21st.  May she Rest In Peace.

Just found out about Dana Fuchs.  AMAZING singer!  This gal has soul!  I know it's not too fair to compare artists and their styles.  But, her passionate, searing vocal delivery is somewhere between Janis Joplin, Wilson Pickett, and Joe Cocker.  Dig this tune from her first record, called "Lonely For A Lifetime" and look for her name in the latest "Spotify Sunday" listing, too.

Luther Allison "It Hurts Me Too"

The late, great, Luther Allison, absolutely smokes this version of Elmore James' tune "It Hurts Me Too" at the 1997 Montreal International Jazz Festival.  Seriously, folks, this is some of the best slide guitar work you'll hear.  Allison puts a hurting on that semi-hollow Les Paul Custom hybrid guitar of his!  Oh, and he sings the fool out of the song, and does Elmore proud!  Crank it up!  Rest In Peace, Luther Allison.

Bluesman Eddie "The Chief" Clearwater, tearing it up on the song "Lonesome Feeling".  As you may notice, Clearwater plays a Gibson ES335 dot neck guitar, strung upside down, as he is a left handed player.  Reminds me of how Otis Rush used to play.  This is a cool number.  Dig it.

In memoriam: George Duke

One of the great jazz fusion and funk keyboardists of our time, George Duke, has passed away.  Yours truly has posted about his music a number of times on this blog, and he was one of the innovators of modern electric jazz to be sure.  His solo work, and also, the work he did with Stanley Clarke, is legendary.  Yours truly was surely a fan.  He will be missed.  Rest In Peace, George Duke.
