concert review: Gregg Allman Band @ Pantages Theater, Minneapolis, MN, 3-27-15

After 45 years on the road with the Allman Brothers Band, who bid their farewell last fall at the Beacon Theater in New York City, one would think that Gregg Allman would have slowed down considerably.  That, couldn't be further from the truth.  Allman brought his large solo band, to Minneapolis, Friday night, for a show, at the Pantages Theater, one of the historic theaters, within Minneapolis' Hennepin Theater district.

To diehard Allman Brothers Band fans, (including yours truly), the band, may have been different.  But, the music, was so familiar, with Allman and company, playing numerous recognizable numbers from the ABB catalog, and at the same time, delivering songs from his own solo catalog, that fans were at home with.  Allman, played his role as bandleader and Hammond B3 wizard, while also, occasionally, strapping on a guitar (either electric, or acoustic), from time to time.  His band mates, including Scott Sharrard on guitar, Pete Levin on electric piano, Ron Johnson on bass, Steve Potts on drums, fellow Allman Brother Marc Quinones on percussion, and a three piece horn ensemble of Jay Collins on saxophones, Art Edmaiston on saxophones, and Mark Franklin, on trumpet.

The band came romping out of the gate, with "Statesboro Blues", a familiar Blind Willie McTell chestnut, the Allman Brothers Band, had played, through their entire career.  Some surprises were heard, throughout the set, too, as Allman delved into many well known solo numbers, including "I'm No Angel", and 1973's "Queen of Hearts" to kick off the show.  Many Allman Brothers Band songs, were present, in the set list, but, reworked, for the horn section, to show their stuff.  One of these, the instrumental from "Live At Fillmore East" titled, "Hot 'Lanta", was a real treat to hear.

This was the most intriguing feature of the show.  The dual drumming so prevalent in the Allman Brothers Band, was also on display, as, occasionally, Steve Potts and Marc Quinones, would replicate the feat by ABB drummers Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe.  Quinones, in his own right, was third wheel, as percussionist, in the Allman's for over 20 years.  The blues, was also heavily represented throughout the show, with tracks such as Muddy Waters' "The Same Thing" and "Trouble No More", and "I Can't Be Satisfied" (which Allman recorded for his 2011 solo blues record, "Low Country Blues"), taking center stage.

Elmore James' "Done Somebody Wrong" (another ubiquitous ABB cover), let the whole horn section shine, with a solo, from lead sax man, Jay Collins.  Gregg introduced "Soulshine" as a song written by, Mr. Warren Haynes, Allman's right hand man in the ABB, and a great guitarist in his own right, who is now working full time with his band, Gov't Mule.  Here, Allman, and guitarist Scott Sharrard, shared the vocal, and it was very well done.  After band intros, an instrumental, starting with the percussion, and building into a classic jam, that the Allman Brothers, were famous for.

This may be Gregg's solo band, with his name on the marquee.  But, that doesn't mean these guys have lost the art of jamming.  Oh no.  Far from it.  Yours truly, cannot remember the name of that jam tune.  It had to be something that the band had written, and is perfecting.  After introducing the band, Allman gave credit (surprisingly), to former ABB lead guitarist, Dickey Betts, to kick off "Southbound", (a Betts penned tune, from the 1973 Allman Brothers record, "Brothers & Sisters"), that is oh so familiar, to fans.

Everyone, from Gregg, to Scott on guitar, to Pete Levin on piano, to the horns, got a solo on this one.  Next up, a tune yours truly only heard live, for the first time... "Dreams".  This one, is another staple of the ABB catalog, from their self titled debut, released in 1969.  Here, the horns, took center stage.  Allman does give his band mates a chance to go for it, and improvise, and during "Dreams", some of that improvisational spirit of the Allman Brothers Band, returned to the fore, including a tandem improvisation between Scott Sharrard, and Jay Collins, which was lots of fun to hear.

To close out the show, "Midnight Rider" took the form of the solo version, from Gregg's "Laid Back" album, featuring electric piano, and horns, more than guitar.  A refreshing take, on a tune, that has seen much rotation, with both the Allman Brothers, and the Gregg Allman Band.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and "Midnight Rider" is one of those songs.  The band closed the set out, with a more uptempo, jazzy version, of the classic "Whipping Post", that, while the pain and anguish of the original was still there, the vibe, was a little different, adding Quinones' percussion, and a Latin feel to the tune.

The encore... another staple... "One Way Out", with Ron Johnson, soloing on bass.  So, though the Allman Brothers Band, is now in the annals of music history, Gregg Allman shows no signs of slowing down, and he and his solo band, delivered a beautifully played, and fun, concert.  Maybe we'll see a live CD and DVD of this band playing together.  Yours truly hopes so.

Midnight Rider footage

This is the only footage from a movie, that was supposed to be made, about the Allman Brothers Band.  Sadly, it will never happen, as one of the camera assistants, (Sarah Jones), was killed.  The footage, is a vivid dream, Gregg has, of his brother, Duane, and is the sole scene, and sole remnant, of a movie, that may be permanently shelved, and never seen, after the accident.  It is unclear, but at this time, the production has been suspended.

Ronnie Hawkins (feat. Duane Allman) "Down In The Alley"

The description below, is from the individual, who posted the video.  Dave Bingham.

Recorded at Muscle Shoals Studio in 1970. This was the result of a deal Ronnie managed with Atlantic Records! He talked them into distributing his own personal label "Hawk" Records. For the sessions he took along 2 members of his own band, Scott Cushnie ( Piano ) & King Biscuit Boy ( Richard Newell ) on Harmonica. Producers Jerry Wexler & Tom Dowd brought along a youg guitarist named Duane Allman, whom they had worked with previously on some John Hammond Jr. sessions. Along with the "Muscle Shoals 4", Barry Beckett - piano, Jimmy Johnson - guitar, David Hood - bass & Roger Hawkins - drums & special guest Eddie Hinton on 2nd guitar; these guys helped Ronnie put together one of the best albums of his career. Only his original Roulette recordings and earlier efforts with future members of "The Band" can compare. And what a treat to have Duane, Scotty & The Biscuit together on one Recording!!!

Mind Blown, Face Melted: Jack DeJohnette Quintet at Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, 3/12/15

Improvisation.  To do it well, is something, lots of musicians, strive for.  But, to others, they say, "lets... just... improvise.  To hell with charts, arrangements, and all the other flimflam.  Let's just play, dang it!"  Jack DeJohnette, and his quintet of high school musician colleagues, did this, in a gig at Walker Art Center, on Thursday night, that yours truly, had the chance to witness.  If you recall, in a gig preview, from yesterday, and a video, the guys in the band talk about how connected they are musically, and as friends, through music, free music, gives these guys a chance to really open up, and show what they feel in the moment.

They surely did that, in the show, at the Walker.  The audience, never knew what was coming next.  There was always something, new, and to the untrained ear, someone would hear a screech, a honk, a thud, or a clunk.  But, to a musician... those things, can be music.  That's what free jazz is all about.  In the beginning of the show, the whole band vamped on one, four note phrase, as a theme, and then, from there, they cut loose into some astounding sonic landscapes.  Tempo?  Who needs tempo?  Well, these cats were syncopated.  But, let's just say, Jack DeJohnette is very, very creative, with his polyrhythms.

Mitchell, Threadgill, and DeJohnette, were willing to go everywhere they possibly could, to find sounds, while bassist, Larry Gray, and pianist, Muhal Richard Abrams held down the rhythmic fort, so to speak.  Abrams, didn't present too many fireworks, and was probably the most understated member of the quintet, when it came to improvising.  He just stayed in a pocket, and so did Larry Gray.  Some bass players really want to chase the melody, while others, are content, with holding the rhythm together.  But, it was DeJohnette's drumming, that shone through, the whole time.

Roscoe Mitchell, and Henry Threadgill, switched between their respective reed instruments and provided the fireworks of the evening, whether it was Mitchell, playing both soprano and alto saxophones, at the same time, or breaking into a section of a tune on baroque flute, or bass recorder, or, Threadgill, doing the same, on bass flute... it was thrilling and exhilarating to hear instruments in the woodwind family, that aren't all that common.

The sounds these players could produce from the instruments, were really neat, because of the fact they were pushing the barriers, of what would otherwise be possible.  Roscoe Mitchell, would occasionally hit notes high enough on the soprano or sopranino saxophones, that the notes would stop, and all you could really hear, was his breath.  Then there were the aforementioned honks, screeches, and shimmers, that were throughout each piece.  This wasn't noise, but rather, musical communication, as if the artists were speaking, through their instruments.  Henry Threadgill on alto saxophone, also achieved this feat.

DeJohnette's drumming, was equally amazing to watch, and hear.  He was absolutely pounding on the drums, and fortunately, didn't break a drum head or a stick in the process.  He also was apt to hit resonating bells quite frequently, that he uses, with his drum set, and add in electronic percussion sounds.  This gives his playing, a wide range, and a varied palette of sounds. Mesmerizing is the word to describe this performance.  Mind blown, face melted, jaw on the floor, afterwards.  A superb improvisational display.

This is how, you play music, without a net.

Jaimoe's Jasssz Band "Can't Lose What You Never Had"

Great cover, of a cover.  Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, with Junior Mack on guitar and lead vocals, performs their version of Muddy Waters' "Can't Lose What You Never Had", which is actually, a cover, of the Allman Brothers Band's rendition of the tune, which was the highlight of their otherwise lackluster 1975 record, "Win, Lose, Or Draw".  This performance is from August 9th, 2014, at the Lowell Summer Concert Series in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Joe Henderson "Me, Among Others"

Check out a jazz fusion/free jazz tune from tenor saxophone legend, Joe Henderson, recorded in 1973.  The tune is called "Me, Among Others", and features Henderson, along with Larry Willis on keyboards, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Arthur Jenkins on percussion.  Recently departed jazz legend, Orrin Keepnews, produced this record.

Here's Alabama Shakes Jaw-Dropping SNL performance

Alabama shakes and lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Brittany Howard, absolutely floored the audience on Saturday Night Live last weekend.  Here is a link to two videos from that performance.  The songs played are "Don't Wanna Fight" and "Gimme All Your Love".  Dig it!
