Herbie Hancock "Mwandishi" Sextet "Sleeping Giant"

Check out "Sleeping Giant" from 1972 by Herbie Hancock and his "Mwandishi" Sextet, featuring:

Herbie Hancock: piano & Rhodes piano
Eddie Henderson: trumpet
Julian Priester: trombone
Bennie Maupin: soprano saxophone, flute, & bass clarinet
Buster Williams: bass
Billy Hart: drums

This precedes, by a year or so, the Headhunters band Hancock formed that became so well known, especially with their first record that came out the year after this, in 1973.  Cool music!

  1. Maupin is credited with all three instruments in this band (soprano sax, flute, and clarinet). But, of course, soprano sax is the main one he uses here, and it's a curved soprano sax as opposed to the more common straight shaped one that looks more like a clarinet.

  2. Just re-posted the video of this particular tune. It had been removed for a time before discovering it being re-posted by Bret Primack (Jazz Video Guy) to give full credit. This is Jazz Video Guy's description.

From French TV, 1972, Herbie's Mwandishi band featuring Billy Hart on drums, Buster Williams on bass, Bennie Maupin on reeds, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone and Herbie Hancock on piano. Here, they play Herbie's Sleeping Giant.
