Yours truly has been influenced and inspired by country music, and the songwriting aspect of it, for a long time, and along with blues, jazz, rock, and soul, it's been a core style that I've drawn from. Now, that doesn't mean all country music is created equal. It is a debate. But, there is FAR MORE to country music than just the stereotypical lyrics heard in most of the 2013 mainstream songs about pretty girls, pickup trucks, dirt roads, and booze.
Not trying to give any advice on what people should listen to. Far from it. But, here's the contrast between mainstream country, and artists off the beaten path, that still holds true to the tradition that country music has been based on throughout it's long, rich history. So, we'll separate the wheat from the chaff, right now.

Sorry BuzzFeed. Y'all are taking too narrow of a view of it. Here's "proof" (in quotes for a reason), that there STILL is good country music out there, and that legacies of the legendary songwriters, along with new talent who actually care about song craft, still exist.
