This week, Full Concert Friday, revisits a legendary performance by a ragtag bunch of ace musicians at the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival, in Montreux, Switzerland. Hard to believe this was recorded 40 years ago! The all-star band includes David Sanborn on alto saxophone, Robben Ford from the initial incarnation of The Yellowjackets, on guitar, Neil Larsen (of Larsen Feiten Band fame) on keyboards (piano, Hammond organ and Hohner Clavinet), Marcus Miller on bass, Mike Mainieri from Steps Ahead on vibraphone, and Yellowjackets' drummer, Ricky Lawson.
Another song from Widespread Panic's July 3rd, 2011 performance at Grand Targhee Resort Amphitheater in Alta, Wyoming. The song is "Junior". Check it out.
From his 1981 "Voyeur" record, here is alto saxophonist and jazz legend, David Sanborn with the first cut on the record, "Let's Just Say Goodbye". This is one of those songs that tells you, in the parlance of jazz and jazz fusion, in the '80s, musical virtuosity was giving way to funkiness and having a definite groove. The band lineup is:
Featured this week on Full Album Friday is the ninth studio record by Soft Machine titled "Softs". This is the final record they did to feature founding keyboardist, Mike Ratledge. The track listing is:
Another one from Jazz Video Guy. The unofficial name of this group is New Directions in Music, and they are paying tribute to both Miles Davis and John Coltrane, playing a medley of jazz standards. Davis' "So What", and Coltrane's "Impressions". The performance is from JazzBaltica, on June 7th, 2002. The full band includes Herbie Hancock on piano, George Mraz on bass, Willie Jones on drums, the late, great Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone, and the late, great Roy Hargrove on trumpet.
The Ron Carter Trio plays the standard "Autumn Leaves" with the maestro, Ron Carter, on upright bass, Russell Malone, on guitar, and Donald Vega, on piano. Not sure where this was recorded as far as concert or venue, but this is a fabulous rendition of a great song. Check it out.
From Jazz Video Guy, another performance by the trio of John McLaughlin on guitar, Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond organ, and Elvin Jones on drums from the 1994 Antibes Jazz Festival in France. The tune is called "Encuentros", and again, the video credit goes to Jazz Video Guy (Bret Primack), for posting it originally, on YouTube. The track was actually originally recorded by this trio for John McLaughlin's 1994 studio record "After The Rain". This is the live version, from Antibes.
This week's Full Concert Friday is a mishmash of performances from several artists, playing live to benefit Gibson Gives, a charity organization set up by the Gibson Guitar Corporation Several artists participated in the benefit concert. Full Album Friday, is stacked this week. This would actually count as both a Full Album and Full Concert Friday, rolled into one. This is the four disc set of John Coltrane's live performance in Japan in 1966. What you have, really, is four different recordings, of each full length performance from 'Trane in this particular concert. This is Coltrane's last group he ever played with and here are the full details on the recording, from the video's uploader Eric Martini.
Live in Japan is a four-disc box set by American saxophonist John Coltrane and his last group, featuring the quintet of Coltrane, his wife/pianist Alice, saxophonist/bass clarinetist Pharoah Sanders, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Rashied Ali.
Recorded live at Tanglewood on July 21st, 1970, here is Chicago with the tune "Beginnings". A favorite of yours truly, since this is a tune in the repertoire of the band I am part of, I94 Express, which has a similar idea and feel, to what Chicago does, with a horn section as part of the ensemble. Check it out.
Another one that can be credited to Jazz Video Guy (Bret Primack). This is a performance on Italian television, (not sure of the year), of a tune by Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Kenny Drew on piano, Jimmy Woode on upright bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums, "Blues For Harvey". Dig it.
From their 1983 record “Mirage A Trois”, here are The Yellowjackets with the tune “Pass It On”. This is the band’s second release and this is the fourth cut on the record. It was produced by Tommy LiPuma, this particular record. The band lineup includes:
