Yours truly has a copy of, and did a review, of this concert DVD. But, for my fellow Allman Brothers Band fans who are still wishing the band was around, here's the 40th anniversary concert, in it's entirety. On this night, March 26th, 2009, 40 years to the day that the band was founded, they played their first two albums, in order, in each set. 1969's "The Allman Brothers Band", and 1970's "Idlewild South".

Warren Haynes echoes the sentiments of many of us (including yours truly), who did not want to see the Allman Brothers Band end. The road could have definitely gone on forever. But, it just was not meant to be. I was fortunate enough to see their last incarnation with Gregg Allman, Warren, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, and Marc Quinones… four times in a span of a decade.

The legendary Joe Cocker (a great singer, and a musical hero and influence of yours truly), has died, at age 70, after a fight with cancer. Cocker's voice exuded pure soul, and though he likely did not write too many of the songs he performed, he took a song, and made it his own, in a way that nobody could replicate. An amazing singer, and a musical icon. Rest In Peace, Joe Cocker.
Posted a full concert that Joe Cocker did in an entry a while back. But, to honor his memory, here is one of those great tunes, that many are surely familiar with. This is "The Letter" as performed by Joe with Mad Dogs & Englishmen, circa 1970.
A cool version of the Christmas carol, "Silver Bells" done by Stephen Colbert, Gregg Allman, and The National. Soon it will be Christmas Day. Click the link and enjoy this one.
Jerry Douglas sings and plays with Tedeschi Trucks Band in a rehearsal before their gig at the Beacon Theater in New York City, playing a tune all of us can relate to, when we realize, the weekend is over, our alarm clock rings, and we go, "ugh! Monday, again!" This is called "On A Monday".

Great Derek & The Dominoes cover by the Tedeschi Trucks Band. This is "Keep On Growing", which is the third cut off the "Layla" record. TTB performed this one at Peach Festival, and yours truly, was there of course. This particular version, comes from a show at The Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 31st, 2014, on the spring leg of their tour.
A bonus blog entry for this Thursday. Happy Birthday to legendary jazz composer and bandleader, Fletcher Henderson... a pianist. Henderson wanted to be a chemist and do work in that field. But, he became a musician after being hired to play piano on a riverboat on the Hudson river in New York City. Henderson, was originally, from Georgia. He founded the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra in 1924. Here is a Henderson composition, entitled "Sugarfoot Stomp".
Willie Nelson and Billy Joe Shaver appear on The Late Show with David Letterman and sing this great, and truthful tune, about there being very few "outlaws" left in country music, because it seems that a lot of country music all sounds the same, by young guys who have no clue what the spirit of the music is really about. Enjoy this one.
Susan Tedeschi introduces and performs with mandolin player and vocalist Amy Ray, on an excellent version of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright".
That track, was one featured on the blog a short time ago... "A Love Supreme". Read the article, and, listen to the whole record, that is posted in the video that is linked to it.
Stevie Ray Vaughan, featuring his quartet band Serious Trouble, with Chris Layton (drums), Tommy Shannon, (bass), and Reese Wynans (Hammond B3 organ), playing the song "Crossfire" in Austin, Texas, on Austin City Limits.
What can be said about Medeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood? This jazz fusion/jam band super group, which is set to retire, after a 20 year career, went out with a bang Sunday night at First Avenue in Minneapolis. They are one of those rare bands, that can break new ground musically, with every project they do. All instrumental jams here, ladies and gentlemen. Do we need a set list? No way, man! Let's just jam! The band played several tunes, including some fantastic and inspiring covers off their latest album, "Juice", which features the trio of Medeski, Martin, & Wood, sans John Scofield.
But, when Scofield does sit in with the other blokes... sparks fly! Amazingly, this is only the fourth record that MMW have done. So much of what they do is based on live shows. Unlike the trio setting, where Medeski has a monstrous arsenal of cool keyboards to jam on, with Scofield on guitar, Medeski relied heavily, only a Hammond B3 and a grand piano. He would switch between the two, even during one tune. There were so many jams, it's impossible to name all of them, even if they were familiar to the legions of fans who eagerly watched the show. I mean, some of us, were standing outside First Ave. as the band was making their entrance. That is how much of a following this band has among their fans. We couldn't wait to get in to see the gig!
The band covered a few familiar classic songs by other artists, pulling off "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Cream, and encoring with Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changin' ". The jams are so intricate, you really have to hear for yourself what they are all about. Sadly, this is the band's last tour, in all likelihood. But, there are albums and videos out there. So, check them out. The energy of the audience, comes from the music with a band like this, especially since there are no vocals anywhere. It's all instrumental improvisation, 100% of the time.
Chris Wood and Billy Martin hold down the rhythm section. Martin has a swing clave rhythm perfected to a T. Chris Wood is an incredible bassist on both electric and upright. John Scofield, he made use of lots of wah pedal, and soaring solos, last night. The energy level the band brings to their shows is instantly felt by the audience, and they absolutely love it. It is hard to find a band that exudes so much energy, coming from the music itself. MSMW is one of the few bands that can really jam instrumentally and captivate an audience for a whole two set show.
The interplay between Medeski's B3 and Scofield's guitar, was a true display of musical communication, and conversation. The two would swap lines back and forth, while Wood and Martin held down the rhythmic fort, and that was thrilling to behold. Sometimes, it seems that only two guitar players in a band, could communicate in that way. But, that's the benefit of having a quartet. If you have one keys player and one guitar player, they can play off of each other, brilliantly. It is a real treat for the ears to hear a band like Medeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood. They may not have produced too many albums, either with Scofield, or, as a trio.
But, I would definitely recommend giving them a listen. It is a shame that the band won't be touring together much longer. But, that's music. People have other projects and other desires that they want to fulfill. So, I wish the players good luck in their future musical endeavors. Who knows... in years to come, we may see a reunion of the trio, with Mr. Scofield, and hear more awesome jams. Nothing lasts forever. But, there may come a time for a reunion at some point.

Dig two versions of a really neat tune, (another wicked instrumental), by Frank Gambale. One is the track itself, and, the other, is Frank, playing it, with a backing track, as a demo, for the Carvin guitars YouTube channel, as Frank endorses and plays Carvin's instruments.
Another Ian McLagan tribute. Here he is with his band, The Bump Band, featuring singer/songwriter Patti Griffin, playing their tune "Never Say Never" in an appearance on The Late Show, with David Letterman.
Posted an excerpt from this show, about a month ago. But, here is the whole concert. This performance showcases the entire album, "Shadows And Light", released in 1980. That album, Mitchell recorded the previous year, at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in 1979, while she toured with Mingus. Dig this.

Continuing to remember keyboardist Ian McLagan's legacy. Here he is, with The Faces, that included Rod Stewart on lead vocals and Ronnie Wood on guitar as well, playing what is probably one of their biggest songs, "Stay With Me". Rest In Peace, Ian McLagan. Gone, but never forgotten.
Let's revisit a tune that was highlighted, but then, taken off the blog,
or at least, the video was deleted. This is composer/guitarist, Mike
Oldfield, with a performance of his biggest song, "Tubular Bells", from
the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival.
Keyboardist Ian McLagan, who played with The Faces, and The Rolling Stones, among others, has died, after suffering a stroke. Yours truly was first made aware of McLagan's talent, hearing him play keys on Warren Haynes' solo record, "Man In Motion", and, on a DVD of a concert from the tour to promote that album. Rest In Peace, Ian McLagan.
Nearly 40 years ago, Stevie Ray Vaughan, broke through as a guitar player, in his native Austin, Texas, playing at the Soap Creek Saloon with an R&B band, Paul Ray & The Cobras. Here is that concert. The band lineup is:

Danny Freeman: guitar
Smokin' Joe Sublett: saxophone
Alex Napier: bass
Rodney Craig: drums

The opening instrumental of a reunion of the Brecker Brothers, sadly, without, the late, great tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, who, along with his brother, and trumpet player, Randy, made some fabulous music. The Brecker Brothers are definitely worth a listen if you haven't heard their work. The reunion band, features this lineup, with Ada Rovatti, filling the saxophone role.
Randy Brecker: trumpet
Ada Rovatti: tenor saxophone
Mike Stern: guitar
George Whitty: keyboards
Will Lee: bass
Dave Weckl: drums
One of the things yours truly is thankful for this Thanksgiving, is jazz. From his 1966 record, "Spellbinder", this is jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo, with the tune "Gypsy Queen". It features Szabo, along with Ron Carter on bass, Chico Hamilton on drums, Victor Pantoja on percussion, and second percussionist, Willie Bobo.
A new version of a contemporary jazz classic. This is Nathan East's updated cover version of Fourplay's "101 Eastbound". Nathan really brings the funk on this one, folks. Dig it!

Check out this tune. It is The Sweet Inspirations with a gospel song called "Get A Little Order", featuring Whitney Houston's mother, (gospel legend Cissy Houston) on lead vocals, and Duane Allman, on slide guitar. Tom Dowd produced this track, who worked with The Allman Brothers Band for nearly every record they did. It was released in 1969.
Check out blues guitarist Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, with his "Okie Dokie Stomp". The tune was released on his album "Bogalusa Boogie Man", in 1975. But, this version goes back to 1966, and a television show called, "The Beat".

Bonnie Raitt and Kim Wilson, play the tune "Coming Home". This is a good one. Wilson, is an ace harmonica player, and of course, bandleader for The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Joni Mitchell performs Charlie Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" with a backing band that includes the late Jaco Pastorius on bass, the late Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone, Pat Metheny on guitar, Don Alias on drums, and Lyle Mays on keyboards.
The Allman Brothers Band covered an Elvis Presley song. This is "I Beg of You" which was a high point on an unfortunately lackluster recording they made in 1981, called "Brothers of The Road". It is, a great song, though. Check it out.

England: John Mayall, the godfather of British Blues, to celebrate 80th birthday with Southport gig
John Mayall’s place in music history became apparent when he put
together the first of his bands, the Bluesbreakers, more than 50 years
ago.
As the artist who provides the link between Cream, Fleetwood
Mac and the Rolling Stones, the Macclesfield born guitarist would go on
to become the godfather of British blues. His role as front man and
mentor has shaped and influenced modern music history. Now he’s back on
the road to celebrate his 80th birthday, calling in at Southport next
month.
“I like Southport,” he says. “Always have. I like
Liverpool too. We’ve played there so many times, had so many good nights
there. Like they say, it’s one of those places where musicians want to
play. For me, now, looking back as I do, I look back at gigs from the
past and it makes me smile.
“Sometimes it’s just a moment that
might stick out in your mind. One particular tune or the way something
sounded in a hall that night. Every show is different – that’s why I’m
still doing it after all these years.”
John is now part way
through his year-long world tour in celebration of his 80th anniversary,
which includes 34 UK dates in October and November this year which
follow dates in North America, Canada and Europe.
“I’m having
fun,” he says simply. “I still love being on the road. I have no idea
what I’ll play yet (in Southport). That’s the joy of it – we see what
works with the hall, what kind of a day we’ve had, how the wind is
blowing. In your part of the world the wind blows pretty strong, so
we’re bound to come up with something.”
Eric Clapton with John
Mayall and friends at the Summer Pops, Kings dock, Liverpool Eric
Clapton with John Mayall and friends at the Summer Pops, Kings dock,
Liverpool. He says he’s looking forward to being back in the UK, and
particularly close to where he grew up. As a teenager he first became
attracted to the jazz and blues 78s in his dad’s record collection.
Initially it was all about guitarists such as Eddie Lang, Lonnie
Johnson, Brownie McGhee, Josh White and Leadbelly. However once he heard
the sounds of boogie woogie piano giants Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson
and Meade Lux Lewis, his desire to play in that style was all he could
think of. At the age of 14 when he went to Manchester’s Junior School of
Art, he had access to a piano for the first time and he began to learn
the basics, as well as mastering the guitar and a couple of years later,
the harmonica, inspired by Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little
Walter.
In a career spanning over half a century he has released
60 albums and contributed to the rock-blues scene more than any other
musician in history and continues to actively record, this summer
releasing his first new studio album in five years, entitled A Special
Life.
It was recorded last November at Entourage Studios in North
Hollywood and was produced byJohn himself, with co-production,
engineering and mixing by Eric Corne. It looked back to his roots, with
an eclectic mix of songs centered in the blues, with diversions into
rock and Americana.
“I’m pleased to still be making records,” he laughs. “I still have that fire to go into the studio and make something happen.”
On the tour, as on the new album, he’s joined by Texas guitarist
Rocky Athas and a Chicago-based rhythm section of Greg Rzab on bass and
Jay Davenport on drums. The current line-up came together five
years ago for his last studio album, Tough, and has developed over the
years through consistent touring around the world. For the UK
tour he will supported by special guest artist, King King. Having won
twice Best Blues Band Award at the British Blues Awards, the Glasgow
four piece led by vocalist/guitarist Alan Nimmo have had rave reviews
for what critics have called their first two classic albums.
“They are great, and I think you’ll like the band too, there’s a good mix in there, we bounce well off each other.” Being in John’s band is something of a badge of honour.
Throughout the 60s, the Bluesbreakers, acted as a finishing school
for the leading blues-rock musicians of the day. Guitarists Eric
Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor joined his merry band in a
remarkable succession, honing their skills before going on to join
Cream, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones. But it didn’t stop there.
John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Jack Bruce and John Almond all played and
recorded with Mayall in the 60s.
“I’ve been very lucky to get to
do what I love for so long,” he says. “I think 80 years – wow that
sounds like a lot. And I suppose it is. But it hasn’t felt like that
because I’ve been enjoying myself so much along the way. “What is it they say? Time flies when you’re having fun. I’ve certainly had a lot of fun.” John Mayall plays Southport Theatre on November 12.

Another great review of the Allman Brothers Band's final ever show at the Beacon Theater, this past Tuesday night. This review comes from Billboard magazine.
This is mind blowing stuff. To some, it may be just a lot of noise. But, this is a really, really cool improvisational jam, featuring John Medeski on Hammond B3, Vernon Reid on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass, and Cindy Santana on drums. Another, in a series of tributes to the late, great master of the bass guitar.
Eric Clapton pays tribute to Jack Bruce with a new instrumental tune. It is simply titled, "For Jack". Eric plays it on acoustic guitar, and is humming the melody. Go HERE to hear it.
Even though I have accepted that it is the end, of one of my all-time favorite bands, there is still one more thing to write about as we close the book on the history of the Allman Brothers Band. The last pages of that book, have been written, after 45 years, and many triumphs, as well as trials and tragedies. I've been following this band every year for the last eleven years, having seen them, four different times during that span. It is hard for me, as a fan, (not so much as a blogger, but as a fan), to write about these guys, without getting choked up. Their music, means a whole lot more to me than I ever could express in writing. Their music has inspired me, and has pushed me to be a better musician. It also, helped me through struggles and successes, during my college years.
More than that, though, the Allman Brothers' music has become a part of me, that is very difficult to describe in words. I said it in my review of Saturday night at the Peach Music Festival. During their performance of "Mountain Jam", I just welled up. Very few bands have had such a positive, uplifting impact on my life, as the Allman Brothers Band has. The records and memories, will still be there. But, it is so hard to accept that these guys are going away for good, even if it may be for the best.
Here are the final set lists from the Allman Brothers concerts at the Beacon Theater in New York City for each day of their six night run there, which follows a run in March, that was postponed.

*For this final show, the Allmans played the majority of the great songs in their catalog, which included only the blues standards that they've covered for so many years like Spencer Davis' "Don't Want You No More", Elmore James' songs "One Way Out" and "The Sky Is Crying", Blind Willie McTell's "Statsboro Blues", and fittingly, closing out with The Carter Family's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", in the middle of "Mountain Jam", and ending the show with the first tune they ever played as a band... "Trouble No More", by Muddy Waters.
Rolling Stone magazine's David Fricke, sums up the whole show.
The band ended the show at 1:30 A.M. this morning. What an amazing way to close out a career. Will the Allman Brothers return? It's very hard to say. 45 years is a long, long time, and with Warren and Derek's solo band's, it seems unlikely. But, one thing is for sure, the music will live on forever. These guys are truly, my favorite band, and I mean that in the most sincere way. Their music has had a major, positive impact on my life. It is very sad to write these final words on the band's legacy. I have followed them, for the last decade at least, ever since they released "Hittin' The Note", which will ultimately be their last studio record, and the only one with the lineup of Derek and Warren on guitars.
But, it is safe to say that their legacy in the pantheon of musical history, is secure. Long live The Allman Brothers Band! Thanks for the memories, guys.
