J.J. Cale "Magnolia"

Another J.J. Cale classic.  This tune is, "Magnolia".  Check out the additional news article added to the previous post of Cale jamming with Eric Clapton.  Rest In Peace, J.J.

In memoriam: J.J. Cale

Great performance by J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton from the first Crossroads Guitar Festival at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, in 2004.  The two of them jammed on Cale's classic numbers, "After Midnight" (a staple of Clapton's catalog), and "Call Me The Breeze", which was covered most famously by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and other bands.  But, sad news to report with this post.  J.J. Cale, the great Tulsa, Oklahoma songwriter, has passed away at the age of 74.  Yours truly LOVED and will continue to love his music, and has blogged an entire album of his great songs.  A truly unique songwriter, and though a man to shy away from the spotlight, still a respected figure in the music world.  Rest In Peace, J.J. Cale.

concert review: Pharaoh Sanders @ The Dakota 7-8-13 (late show)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Fmg_4cDiGo

Pharaoh Sanders' show at The Dakota last night (July 8th), was an awakening into not only a new artist, but kind of a new realm of jazz.  Here's what the preview looked like.
http://www.dakotacooks.com/event/pharoah-sanders-2/2013-07-08/

As the legendary tenor saxophonist performed with his quartet band, that also had piano, drums, and upright bass, the music flowed effortlessly from all involved and the magic of this music was especially felt on his signature tune, "The Creator Has A Master Plan".  Sanders is normally known for serious and extreme use of overblowing technique on his tenor saxophone, which can become very screechy and harsh at times.

But, in the live setting, he played with vigor, and yet, in a more subdued, tasteful manner, pleasurable to the listener's ear.  The band jammed on one or two numbers very seriously.  But, "The Creator Has A Master Plan" also involved audience participation, with Sanders leading the audience in call and response of hummed parts of the song.  Above, is a link to a part of this tune, which in it's original form, takes up 33 minutes.  The video shows about eleven minutes worth, or less, which may be enough to showcase it.  Haven't found any YouTube material with the whole tune on it.  Do listen to the record if you have a chance.  However, for my taste, the live performance last night, was extremely well executed.

This marked Sanders' first performance in the Twin Cities in 15 years.  Sanders' music really and truly has to be experienced by a listener to be fully understood.  There are mysteries in it, that only his playing can reveal.
