Willie Nelson & Ray Charles "Seven Spanish Angels"

Happy 80th birthday to Willie Nelson.  Yours truly saw Willie and his band play at the Northrop Auditorium in 2002.  That was my introduction to country music.  Here is a performance Nelson did with the late, great, Ray Charles, on a song called "Seven Spanish Angels".  Check it out.  Happy Birthday, Willie Nelson.

Duke Ellington at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956

Here's a treat.  This is a short film, AND, the performance by Duke Ellington at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, where his saxophonist Paul Gonzalez plays 26 choruses in a solo on "Diminuendo and Crescendo In Blue".

...And so, here it is, ladies and gentlemen.  THE performance of "Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue."

In memoriam: George Jones

Country music legend George Jones has passed away.  Yours truly at least heard some of his songs.  Not all of them.  Will have to go through his catalog and see what I might have missed.  Two favorites are, his cover of Jape "The Big Bopper" Richardson's "White Lightning", and "He Stopped Loving Her Today", which may be one of if not the saddest country ballad ever written, that Jones made a hit in 1980.  George Jones was well respected in all of music.  He was another country musician, like a Willie Nelson, or a Johnny Cash, who had appeal to rock and pop fans, and bands, too.

There is an article about his passing, and his career milestones in People magazine.  Here's the link.
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20694830,00.html?icid=maing-grid7|maing5|dl2|sec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D304559

Here are the two songs mentioned that yours truly liked.

"White Lightning"

"He Stopped Loving Her Today"

"Possum" was George Jones' nickname.  Some liked his style.  Maybe others didn't.  But, he'll always be a legend.  Rest In Peace, George Jones.

Quinn Sullivan, 14-Year-Old Blues Prodigy, Impresses The Masters

This kid is incredible!  Quinn Sullivan, a blues guitar prodigy, who the great Buddy Guy has taken under his wing in a way.  What an honor.

Jeff Lorber Fusion "Curtains"

Another of my favorite songs as of late.  This is "Curtains" by Jeff Lorber Fusion from their 1977 album, "Soft Space".  Featured this in a "Spotify Sunday" list not too long ago.  Great tune.

Marcus Miller & Al Jarreau "You Don't See Me"

Groovy tune with a significant message in a way.  This is Al Jarreau and Marcus Miller's "You Don't See Me".  Jarreau's unique vocal delivery, and Miller's solid, funky slap bass, really meld together here.

The Black Crowes have another new lead guitarist

Yours truly was shocked by this announcement.  But, the Black Crowes, coming off of a three-year hiatus, have a new lead guitarist.  Luther Dickinson has been replaced, by Jackie Greene.  I was massively thrown for a loop on this one!  Yours truly will miss Luther, as I saw him with the Crowes, twice.  But, all the best to Jackie Greene in his role as the new lead guitarist for the Crowes.  Should be a good thing, and not affect the music at all.

http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/jackie-greene-impresses-as-black-crowes-lead-guitarist/

Greene is also a member of Steve Gorman's side project, Trigger Hippy.  Gorman, is of course, the drummer for the Black Crowes.  Greene's band mates in Trigger Hippy are Joan Osborne, Gorman, Tom Bukovac, and Nick Govric.  In addition, Greene also leads his own band, The Jackie Greene Band.  The lineup for the Jackie Greene Band is:

Jackie Greene: guitar
Nathan Dale: guitar
Jeremy Plog: bass
Steve Taylor: keyboards
Zack Bowden: drums

Return To Forever "No Mystery"

One of my FAVORITE Return To Forever compositions.  This is "No Mystery" from their 1975 album of the same name.  This version features the RTF III line up, which at that time, was a quartet, and still featured Al di Meola on guitar.

Hiram Bullock "Cactus"

Been digging this song a lot, and it was part of a recent Spotify Sunday playlist.  Check out "Cactus" by Hiram Bullock.  Bluesy guitar and funky slap bass meld together really well on this one.  It is from the "From All Sides" record, circa 1986.

Rest In Peace, Hiram Bullock.

Roy Clark "12th Street Rag"

Roy Clark is most well known in country music circles.  But, he is definitely a guitarist who can play several styles.  He is mentioned with his country music contemporaries such as Chet Atkins, Buck Owens (who he co-hosted the comedy show Hee Haw with, for many years), Hank Snow, Bob Wootton, Luther Perkins, Joe Maphis, or Glen Campbell.  But, he surely has his own unique sound, and... as this video shows, a zany sense of humor, too.  Dig it.

Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival @ Madison Square Garden, Night Two Highlights 4/13/13

Some interesting things happened on the second night of the Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, with Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones coming to jam with Eric, and also, the Allman Brothers not doing a full set, but rather, having Derek Trucks sit in with some of the other bands, and an acoustic set featuring Derek, Gregg Allman, and Warren Haynes.  There were some other really cool jams, too.  Check out all the highlights, here.

http://www.whereseric.com/eric-clapton-news/303-crossroads-guitar-festival-night-2

Also, here is a list of the top 20 moments of the festival throughout the weekend, from Premier Guitar magazine.

http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2013/May/20_Best_Moments_of_Crossroads_2013.aspx

Can't wait for this show to come out on DVD.

Shiny side up, Dirty side down

The second half of this review's title makes reference to the most recent studio album put out by Georgia jam band giants, Widespread Panic.  Road toughened warriors of the jam rock circuit for 25 or so years, who played the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis on Sunday night.

I was anticipating this show to be an epic.  A real humdinger.  An experimentation fit for a musical science lab as it were.  Well, unfortunately, it seemed that the one mad scientist, has a lab staff of 100 level greenhorns coming into the class without any inclination of how to formulate high levels of musical chemistry to achieve these improvisational fireworks, and instead, he must do so, as a solitary figurehead, even though he is purely considered a humble sideman in the group, dressed casually, standing in one place, eyes squarely focused upon the neck of his guitar.

The "mad scientist" in question is Widespread Panic's guitar wizard, Jimmy Herring.  During Sunday night's show at the Orpheum, Herring stood a mountain above his fellow band mates, as Widespread Panic seemed to veer through unrecognizable jams that left yours truly asking, "What just hit me?" on more than one occasion.  Herring, was the master, wrenching passionate howling cries from his guitar that were as intricate as they were melodious and left this rock and roller grinning like a stuck possum for the whole of the concert.  He was the compass, but it seemed his band mates, were not as nearly up to the task of following the course he'd pointed them in.

Keyboardist Jojo Herman tried to stick with the plan, adding some spirited sprinkles and spritzes of Clavinet to songs, on occasion.  His other keyboard of choice, the mighty Hammond B3 organ, seemed to be MIA, however.  Bassist Dave Schools, seemed to not be up to his usual prowess in the show, like he is on many of their studio records, where he contributes some credible and listenable slap bass fills.  The same could go for the percussion section.  Todd Nance on drums, and Sonny Ortiz on percussion, try to emulate the thunderous drumming powerhouse of their fellow Georgia blues rock uber jam brethren, the Allman Brothers.  But, Nance and Ortiz do not seem to wield such strength, sticking to basic rock 4/4 patterns as opposed to the jazzy, shifting time signatures employed by the Allmans, or any well known '70s fusion group.

Widespread Panic is very strong when it comes to their studio records.  But, sadly, though they've got years on the road behind them, musically, their live show leaves a possible fan, wanting much more than what they might receive when getting their ticket stub scanned, walking into the venue.

Gregg Allman Music Biopic in the Works From 'CBGB' Filmmakers

This is pretty cool.  I wonder if it will come to fruition.  A real biopic about the Allman Brothers.  It's been done for the likes of Ray Charles and Johnny Cash before.  Only time will tell whether a movie will be made.  It seems that it would be based off of Gregg Allman's recently published autobiography which came out last year.

Happy Birthday, Carl Perkins.  One of my favorite songs of all time.  Elvis Presley made this tune famous.  But, the man who wrote it, Carl Perkins, deserves the credit.  Perkins passed away back in 1998, but today, would mark his 81st birthday. May he Rest In Peace.

Allman Brothers Band, Saturday Night in Macon concert footage, circa 1973

This is a true gem.  Check it out.  The Allman Brothers perform in 1973, and this footage is some of the only material that exists of the band at that time in their career, after Duane Allman and Berry Oakley passed on.  This lineup with Dickey Betts on guitar, Lamar Williams on bass, and Chuck Leavell on keys, along with Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, lasted from 1973 to 1976.  Also in this concert set are performances by Wet Willie and The Marshall Tucker Band.  They are probably from around the same time (1973 or so), featuring short, but dynamic performances by all three bands.  This is a goldmine if you're into southern fried boogie rock jams.  Check it out.

THIS is awesome news!  Not sure if the Crossroads Guitar Festival will be broadcast on the web.  Might have to wait for DVD/Blu Ray to see it.  But, VERY excited about the prospect.

Gear Daddies

Yours truly saw the Gear Daddies perform in place of Lynyrd Skynyrd who was the scheduled act for a concert date at the Minnesota State Fair in 2005.  Since then, I've paid attention to their music off and on.  Here are some of their well known tunes.  Check these out.  Two songs that have given the band recognition by their fans.  "Stupid Boy", and "Don't Look At Me".  There are many more to be sure.
