Herb Ellis & the Oscar Peterson Trio, "A Gal In Gallico"

This is a snappy little number, featuring jazz guitar great Herb Ellis, who passed away in 2010.  Watch how Ellis, uses his guitar, as a percussion instrument for the first part of the tune.  Don't tell me that didn't influence funk guitarists later on.  That's the best part of the whole tune.  Rest In Peace, Herb Ellis.  He passed away three years ago, today.

Yellowjackets "Matinee Idol"

Totally digging into this tune, and this band at the moment.  The Yellowjackets were another '80s jazz fusion band, and what is noteworthy, is that one of their original members, was guitarist Robben Ford, who has made a name for himself as a blues and jam band player throughout most of his career.  Well, he started out in a jazz fusion band, albeit very briefly.  Here is a real groovy tune by them, from their 1981 self titled debut.  The song, "Matinee Idol".

Another great cover of a funk tune by Candy Dulfer and her band.  This is "Pick Up The Pieces" originally by the Average White Band, released as a funk tune in 1974, written by saxophonist Roger Ball, and guitarist Hamish Stuart.  Dig it.

record collection revisited: William Bell "The Soul Of A Bell" + favorite song on the record

Revisiting an artist from the Stax Spotify playlists yours truly highlighted a while back.  Recently, I acquired a CD in a used record shop by William Bell, titled, "The Soul of a Bell".  The album was recorded in 1967.  Bell is one of the lesser known great soul singers from the '60s, and yours truly also found much of his material, on Spotify, (refer to some of the Spotify Sunday playlists).

Candy Dulfer & Funky Stuff "In The Slot"

Great cover of the Tower of Power song "In The Slot" by Dutch smooth jazz saxophonist Candy Dulfer.   Dulfer began playing saxophone at age six and founded her band, Funky Stuff, at age fourteen.  She also has played with the likes of Van Morrison, Pink Floyd (as a guest artist for their 1990 concert at Knebworth stadium), Prince, and Rod Stewart.   Dig this!
