"Angel From Montgomery"

Two great versions of John Prine's song "Angel From Montgomery" done by the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Bonnie Raitt, respectively.  I have heard Bonnie's version live, twice, and must say that the TTB version is equally wonderful.  Derek, Susan, and the band, also bookend it in a medley with "Sugaree" by The Grateful Dead.  Enjoy.

Alan Parsons Project "Games People Play"

Good song that is usually played on classic rock radio.  This is "Games People Play" by the Alan Parsons project.  Parsons is a musician, producer, and audio engineer.  He worked on "Dark Side of The Moon" with Pink Floyd.  He plays keyboards, bass, guitar, and flute, and is occasionally, a vocalist.  With his band, the Alan Parsons Project, he consistently made recordings between 1976 and 1987.  He also recorded four solo albums in the 1990s and actually, his latest solo album came in 2004.

Many albums he's contributed to, have at least been nominated for Grammy Awards as well.

Duane Allman Celebrated With Massive Box Set

Fellow Allman Brothers fans (if you're out there), definitely check this out.  A monstrous Duane Allman box set cometh.  Yours truly has the 4 CD "Dreams" box set, and it's a great one.  But, this will add to the cool factor for any fans of the ABB or of Duane's work preceding that, even.

Cream "Spoonful"

Great live version of "Spoonful", by Cream.  This originally was written by blues songwriting legend, and bassist, Willie Dixon and also performed by Howlin' Wolf.  It seems though, that Cream's version has become the definitive one.  Enjoy.

record collection revisited: Pinetop Perkins "How Long?"

Blues piano legend Pinetop Perkins passed away this year (2012) at age 97.  For most of his life, he dedicated himself to being a blues pianist and coming up with his own sound and style, influenced by other musicians.  On this recording, Perkins was joined by an ace group of players who wanted to make a record in tribute to him, and have him be a part of it.

Some of the major names contributing to the record are vocalist Emily Gimble, guitarist & vocalist Gary Clark Jr., vocalist Carolyn Wonderland, and lap steel guitar player, Cindy Cashdollar.  Clark Jr., Gimble, and Wonderland are the vocalists.  Here's the whole band.

Pinetop Perkins: piano & vocals
Jake Langley: guitar
J.J. Johnson: drums
Chris Maresh: acoustic bass
George Rieff: electric bass
Mike Flanigin: organ
Cindy Cashdollar: lap steel guitar on "Got My Mojo Working"

record collection revisited: Buddy Guy "Live At Legend's"

Performing at his own Chicago based blues club, Legends, Buddy Guys scorches the stage with his band on his new live record, aptly titled, "Live At Legends".  Guy was the prototype for much blues drenched guitar playing we hear today in blues, rock, and jam band circles.  Eight of the tracks are live, recorded in January of 2010 when the performance took place, while there are three additional new studio numbers, too.

Guy's performance is fiery as he effortlessly unearths soul tingling, screaming notes and tones from his Fender Stratocaster and sings with passion and abandon he's known for.  He pays tribute mid set to his inspirations, and legends he inspired.  Those artists are Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix.  He does medley's of Hooker's "Boom Boom" and Cream's "Strange Brew", that though kind of fractured, pay a great tribute, and repeats the feat with Hendrix' "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", and Cream's "Sunshine of your Love".

Guy's backing band is solid and keeps right up with him.  The members of his band include:

Buddy Guy: lead guitar & vocals
Rick Hall: guitar
Marty Sammon: keyboards
Orlando Wright: bass
Tim Austin: drums

Sammon and Tom Hambridge (Guy's record producer) sing backing vocals on a couple songs.  His devoted fans are charged up and definitely into it during the performance.  Yours truly has seen Buddy Guy play before, and has been inspired by his style.  But, any listener's who have yet to discover him, check out this new live record.  It's a good place to start.

Here's the track listing for "Live At Legend's"

1. Intro by Tom Marker
2. Best Damn Fool
3. Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters cover)
4. I Just Want To Make Love To You (Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters cover)
5. Skin Deep
6. Damn Right I Got The Blues
7. Boom Boom/Strange Brew (medley) (John Lee Hooker & Cream covers, respectively)
8. Voodoo Chile/Sunshine of Your Love (medley) (Jimi Hendrix & Cream covers, respectively)

Bonus studio recordings:

9. Polka Dot Love (Guy has been known to play Stratocaster's with polka dot paint schemes in the past)
10. Coming For You
11. Country Boy

Buddy Guy was just recently awarded with an honor from the Kennedy Center.  A true legend, and a bridge between the past and the present when it comes to the blues.  Dig this live set.  It's a good one.

Dickey Betts, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Daniels & Bonnie Bramlett on Midnight Special

A spirited take on "Southbound" by The Allman Brothers on the Midnight Special TV show, featuring Dickey Betts, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Daniels, and Bonnie Bramlett.  "Southbound" is performed, followed by an improvised blues shuffle jam in which Elvin Bishop is singing about getting a little wild with the booze and smokes I guess.  The finale is "Good Time Feeling", a song written by Dickey Betts that he performed with his band Dickey Betts & Great Southern.  It is performed, twice.
